Note:
Missa Brevis was originally written in 2010 and sung for the first time at Masses at Paróquia de São Judas Tadeu
(Saint Jude’s parish) in Niterói, Brazil in 2010. It was considerably revised in 2022 and sung for the first time in
2022 and 2023 at Masses in Brazil at Família Luz da Vida in Goiânia and at Christmas’s Midnight Mass at Paróquia
Pessoal Senhor Bom Jesus Crucificado e Imaculado Coração de Maria in Bom Jesus do Itabapoana. With a total
duration of approximately 11 minutes, Missa Brevis has seven parts: Kyrie, Gloria, Alleluia, Sanctus, Benedictus,
Amen, and Agnus Dei.
In the Ordinary Form of the Roman Rite, Benedictus should be sung immediately after Sanctus. In the Extraordinary
Form of the Roman Rite, Sanctus should be sung before Consecration, and Benedictus should be sung after
Consecration.
Although ideally played on a pipe organ, the organ part was written in a way it can also be played on an electrical
keyboard with an organ sound. However, if played on a pipe organ, the suggested registration is “flûtes + gambe”
when piano is indicated, and “principal + mixtures” when forte is indicated. The organ part should be played legato.
Missa Brevis is written for SATB choir, organ, and violin. The violin part is optional. The organ part is
recommended, but Missa Brevis may also be sung a cappella. There is also a simplified version of Missa Brevis in
unison with chord symbols, which may be transposed as needed.
