Forty Days in the Desert

40 Days in the Desert
Composer: Henrique Coe

Concert: 19/Jan/2016 (Student Composers’ Concert)
Walter Hall (University of Toronto)

Program note:
40 Days in the Desert, for wind quintet, was composed in 2013 in Brazil and premiered in 2014 in Montreal. In 2015 the piece received a major revision, which was performed for the first time in this concert on the 19th January 2016 at the University of Toronto.
Inspired by the forty days Jesus spent in the desert resisting the temptations of the Devil (Luke 4: 1-14), the piece alternates between tense passages (the temptations) and soft and beautiful ones (the virtues). At the conclusion of the piece, a sequence of harsh dissonances is followed by a calm and gentle consonant harmony reflecting the victory of virtue over temptation.

Performers:
Sophie Lanthier (Flute)
Meredith Liu (Oboe)
Marc Blouin (Clarinet)
